Kido means, “Energy Way”. Two days of chanting, bowing, & playing percussion instruments such as bells, clackers, and drums, while walking. An intensive practice of chanting samadhi where all sounds become one universal sound.

Chanting is a form of meditation in Buddhism. It gives us direct access to the spiritual world. It balances our subtle energy system while allowing for deeper meditation. No prior experience is necessary, and anyone is welcome.

Our guest sunims will present and teach us the technique and power of Korean Buddhist chants.

About the sunims:

Abbot Hwikwang Sunim entered the Buddhist priesthood in 1972. He then studied eastern and western philosophy for five years at Dong-guk University, College of Buddhism. Because of he’s keen insight into human karma became Abbott of several temples all over Korea. In 1991 he started 1000 day Kwanum kido (chanting) and has continued doing 1000 day kidos for the last 29 years. In all his Buddhist monks life of 46 years he has only been praying for all people. In 1998 Abbot Hwikwang Sunim founded New York Bulkwang Temple. The Temple has become one of the most successful Temples in America. Hwikwang Sunim due to his chanting and insight into to Buddhist philosophy has attracted both Western and Korean shindo.

Dae Soeng Sunim started practicing zen meditation 1970, being one of the first American students of Zen Master Seung Sahn. He has lived for more than 20 years in Korea where he studied at the Dongguk Buddhist University and was ordained as a Buddhist monk. He has been practiced in traditional temples in Korea and the Kwan Um School, and currently resides and teaches at the Korean temple «Bul Kwang Sa Zen Center »in Tappan, New York.
